Friends of Writers congratulates faculty member Lan Samantha Chang, winner of the 2023 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for her novel, The Family Chao. The award, presented by the Cleveland Foundation, recognizes a book that contributes to “our understanding of racism and the appreciation of diversity of human cultures.”

Speaking on receiving the award, Chang said, “I am very honored to receive this significant accolade because some of the writers I love most—Edward P. Jones, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Toni Morrison—have also received it.”
