Friends of Writers (FOW) raises funds that support adult writers, MFA students, faculty, and alumni.

In alignment with its mission, FOW provides a wide range of financial support for the students, alumni, and faculty of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Numerous scholarships and internships are available to enrolled students. FOW also provides alumni with scholarships to the annual Conference, a gathering for program graduates, and post-graduate stipends in support of first-book completion. All scholarship donations flow directly into the funds detailed on this page.

Established in 2013 through the generosity of the family of faculty member Wilton Barnhardt, this fund provides non-renewable scholarships which cover a semester’s residency fee at the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College.

The Carol Houck Smith Scholarship substantially supports a fiction student completing their thesis manuscript, either in their final semester or in an extra semester.

Established by 1979 poetry alumna Linda Nemec Foster in honor of her faculty mentor, Lisel Mueller, this scholarship supports students with small children.

Created in honor of 1985 poetry alumna and faculty member Renate Wood, this 4-semester renewable scholarship supports incoming poetry students with high levels of need.

During the Black Lives Matter protests of summer 2021, FOW heard from several writers in our community who asked how they could help writers of color. FOW established a new fund, Grants for Change, to direct support immediately toward writers of color and international students. Now fully endowed, Grants for Change will offer assistance as determined by the FOW Board.

Established in 2022 by a program alumnus, the Wally Scholarship provides single-semester support at a variety of levels for students who demonstrate financial need.
