Scholarships and Projects

Friends of Writers (FOW) raises funds that support adult writers, MFA students, faculty members, and alumni.

FOW provides scholarships and internships to MFA students at the Warren Wilson College (WWC) Program for Writers. FOW also provides scholarships and financial support to the Wally Conference, an annual conference for alumni. In addition, FOW supports alumni and faculty through fellowships that align with its mission. All scholarship donations flow directly into the programs detailed on this page.

The Amy Grimm Student Emergency Fund

The Amy Grimm Fund supports continuing students and emergency need

The Barnhardt Family Fund

The Barnhardt Family Fund is needs-based and supports residency costs for MFA students. It honors a connection with Warren Wilson spanning almost a century. “For nearly eighty years, as a religious farm school, as home of the best low-residency MFA in the country,” writes fiction faculty member Wilton Barnhardt, “this lovely campus in the most beautiful valley in the whole of Appalachia has joined itself to our family history.”

The Carol Houck Smith Scholarship

The Carol Houck Smith Scholarship directly supports students completing their thesis manuscripts.

The Lisel Mueller Scholarship

The Lisel Mueller Scholarship supports students with small children

The Memorial Fund

The Memorial Fund provides scholarships to the annual Alumni Conference in honor of former Warren Wilson graduates Ali Dor-Ner, Kitty Hamilton, Beth Stahlecker, Marjorie Woodbury, Michelle Wyrebek, and Linda Dyer

The MFA General Scholarship

This scholarship fund supports the MFA students with demonstrated financial need.

The Renate Wood Memorial Scholarship

The Renate Wood Memorial Scholarship supports entering student poets

The Rodney Jack Scholarship

The Rodney Jack Scholarship is a renewable scholarship for students who identify as LGBTQIA.

The Steve Orlen Fund for Faculty

The Steve Orlen Fund supports faculty sabbatical leave and emergency funds.

The Wally Fund

The Wally Fund supports students in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. This fund is awarded at the discretion of the MFA Program Director in consultation with the MFA Academic Board Chair.
