• Our Story

    an opened book

A non-profit 501(c)(3) independent organization since 1991, Friends of Writers provides scholarships to MFA students and fellowships to MFA grads.

Our mission is to foster vital literary voices and initiatives. Our vision is a world in which literary community is vibrant, inclusive, and well-supported.

Friends of Writers carries a legacy of generosity. FOW began in 1991 by the founder of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, Ellen Bryant Voigt, and three alumni – Joan Aleshire, Louise Glück, and Martha Rhodes. They sought to create a supportive nonprofit organization to assist adult writers financially, through readings, scholarships and shared resources.

From July 2009 onwards, FOW has provided more than three hundred and fifty scholarships and internships to students and alumni of the MFA program. In addition, FOW provides scholarships and financial support to an annual conference of alumni as well as postgraduate writing stipend for alumni working toward their first book. FOW has supported the production of five writing anthologies, whose editors and contributors donated 100% of each book’s advances and royalties to FOW scholarships. We also created a digitized anthology of lectures and readings from 1988 onwards, making the Program for Writers collection of craft lectures available to writers world over for a small fee. Since the start of the COVID19 pandemic, we’ve also granted emergency support to assist alumni navigate unforeseen circumstances.

Co-Founder and Board Member Martha Rhodes remarked, “Generosity has been the driving force of Friends of Writers and the reason why I will always work for and support this organization…We are a small but mighty force, determined to reach out to our dynamic community of writers and hold on fast. This determination has never waned and Friends of Writers continues, to this day, to make life as a writer possible for so many.”

All donations to FOW flow directly into the scholarships and support of the literary community, and toward literature that reflects and represents our diversity.

Our Values

Generosity

Our work relies on the principle of generosity, shared by our Board and our donors.

Community

While writing can be a solitary art, we fund individuals, events, and projects that build community.

Time is necessary to writing

Every writer knows the difficulty of finding the time to write – predawn mornings, children’s nap times, lunch breaks – moments when words find the page. Financial support translates into time for writers to focus on craft.

Literature is essential

We passionately believe that literature is essential to the world.

Rigor

We are rigorous and open in our work as funders of the literary arts – thorough and meticulous in our research, processes, and funding.

Creativity and Imagination

Creativity and imagination are essential to all art, and should be celebrated and cultivated. As an organization, we ascribe to no one school of thought and work with an expansive community of creative thinkers.

Diversity of people, projects, and ideas

We celebrate the true diversity of the world we live in. All writers deserve access to opportunities to further their craft. We are committed to the ongoing support of an inclusive literary landscape.

Transparency

We always strive to be responsible and transparent stewards of our resources.
